Old
The sun at an estimated 4.6 billion years old, at its middle age now, I feel blessed to have a sunset today!!
Old
The band uniforms are old. Mt Carmel has the oldest ones of all the high schools in the district. We've been asking for new ones for years now. Guess what? We are getting new ones! This is the last year of wearing these. We just had word that the district has authorized $50,000 to buy new uniforms. YIPEE!!
Old
This handsome Galapagos tortoise was enjoying a neck scratch today at the zoo. He weighs a whopping 400 pounds and is estimated to be at least 100 years old.

Lined Up
I live in Park Slope, Brooklyn - the land of babies and baby strollers. This line of parked strollers is just one of many that you might see if you ever visit my quaint little neighborhood.
Lined up
This wasn't the pic I was planning on but our day didn't work out to plan at all. Oh well. Artists pencils.
Lined Up
All my life I have been happy and fascinated at the library. This is how we used to check out books.
Lined up
James lined up all the tickets that he and Joe (Dad) need for their marathon sports day. Train tickets for the Long Island Railroad and New Jersey Path; tickets for the NY Giants football game and then on to see the NY Rangers hockey game at Madison Square Garden tonight. James is so excited and could not believe that he was going to have such a "dream" day.
Lined Up
thought I had Lined Up sorted when we drove past this a couple of days ago.....timber stacked ready for charcoal burning. Unusual to see it stacked this shape (usually oval). Having chopped down dozens of trees they stack the timber and then cover the whole pile with earth leaving a tiny hole. They then set fire to the timber through the hole and leave to burn....very slowly without oxygen.....two weeks later they have charcoal to sell......and the devastation of the countryside increases. Not an easy way to make money, but they can do it with no investment and no overheads. A pile such as this would produce about 25 sacks of charcoal, each one selling at the roadside for about USD 8. Transported to Dar es Salaam the sacks sell for about $ 28. The countryside is fast becoming desert.

Lined up
Way before husband and kids came along I rode horses. I was hoping to have a daughter who was just as horse crazy as I was when I was little. I got the girl, but not a horse crazy one. Oh well, one of these days I will have another horse of my own.
Lined Up
thought I would have a real battle this week...there is nothing 'lined up' in Africa!! then this Tanzanian Millipede crawled into the dining area yesterday morning. He is about 8 inches long and finger width. They can grow quite a bit larger. Totally harmless, they curl up into a tight circle when disturbed.

Weather
I could see the fog coming in at the beach this afternoon - difficult to capture, but clear on the left, foggy on the right.
Weather
I don't know if I can really count this as a photograph, but here it is anyway! It's getting to summer here, which means temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius. (Don't ask me what the conversion to Fahrenheit is- I have no idea:) here's the forecast for the next two days!
Weather
D trying on his new hat as he prepares for the cold weather... Having no patience for his mother as I wanted to take a photo.
weather
While driving through the never ending flat fields in Walkerton, I saw the wind powered turbines and thought of how Jossiemou. Turns out we aren't that far away after all.. Same arguments here, everyone wants the power but no one wants them in their field OR the fields of their neighbours!
Weather
One of my favorite days of the year - the NYC marathon. I'm always so amazed by these runners who show such dedication to get through 26.2 miles! As we stood bundled up on the sidelines, and the weather took a cold and windy turn, I was so inspired by these marathoners who would have run no matter what. Congrats runners!
Weather
Had to sit in the grass and get my bum wet for this one. The Chicago weather really cleared up today but it was only 35 degrees when I took this!
Weather
This is the result (very cleaned up) of a very tall tree being uprooted during Superstorm Sandy, 2012. The oak tree was in our neighbor's side yard and thankfully fell diagonally, clipping our roof. Even though we needed a new roof, everyone was safe. The 50 foot tree landed so close to our house that we were unable to open our front door and the full length of the house was literally hidden by it. Our neighbor's shrubs were also uprooted, thus the gap in the hedges. The miracle of it is that if the tree had fallen any other way, even by an inch, we would not have been so lucky with no one being hurt.
Weather
This weeks subject 'weather' was really difficult for me....it's always sunny at this time of year. I was almost despairing of a weather photo when.......we were driving from Kisampa to Dar es Salaam a couple of days ago when out of nowhere a huge grey cloud loomed and a few spots of rain fell on us....rainy weather. The shower lasted about 2 minutes and we have had hot, really hot sunny weather ever since!!!
