New leaves appearing on the Acacia tree just below our house. Giraffes just love these leaves and curl their tongues around the stem, pulling the leaves off and....somehow.... miss the humungous thorns!!
Some of the thorns have a sort of bulbous part near the stem....these usually have a hole in them. The wind whistles through these holes and the common name for this particular Acacia is 'Whistling Thorn'.
Amazing photo and despite not wanting to be stuck by one of these, it is beautiful! Interesting how your perspective keeps changing.
ReplyDeleteOh, this is wonderful. I have seen these trees at the zoo but never knew the fun story around them. Beautiful photo as well. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove the photo and documentary. Thinking of you and Africa as we walk around the hotel we are staying at in the Atacama Desert. Lots of Acacia trees.......but of course no giraffes!
ReplyDeleteSeems like the perfect tree to plant outside your kids window! no sneaking out in that house! Very interesting picture and cool details about the whistling. great detailed shot
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeanann for the story of the whistling thorn; fairy tale material! I love the daintiness of the small leaves against the ominous thorns.
ReplyDeleteThis is quite amazing! Love your photo!
