Lined Up

thought I had Lined Up sorted when we drove past this a couple of days ago.....timber stacked ready for charcoal burning. Unusual to see it stacked this shape (usually oval). Having chopped down dozens of trees they stack the timber and then cover the whole pile with earth leaving a tiny hole. They then set fire to the timber through the hole and leave to burn....very slowly without oxygen.....two weeks later they have charcoal to sell......and the devastation of the countryside increases. Not an easy way to make money, but they can do it with no investment and no overheads. A pile such as this would produce about 25 sacks of charcoal, each one selling at the roadside for about USD 8. Transported to Dar es Salaam the sacks sell for about $ 28. The countryside is fast becoming desert.

  3. This is a beautiful photo of a very sad fact. Wish we could come up with a better use of the land and a way to have everyone still benefit without destroying the vegetation. Thanks again for sharing your life with us. It is so enlightening.
