Project 52 - Pattern

Just happened to cross the St James's Park Bridge and not only saw a Pattern of Algae but Buckingham Palace flying the Queen's Royal Standard to telling us she was at home!!

For some time I have collected Chinese Willow Pattern (commonly know as Blue Willow) antique porcelain plates and wall mounted them.  This one dates back to the 1850's.

Its exam week, which means I am flat out studying (cramming) before it all starts. As the worlds biggest procrastinator, I decided that I would waste as much time as possible by painting my little brothers face with left over cam-paint from my Army Cadet days. He's currently in the shower, scrubbing the oily paint from his face. The cam paint is used in both the regular army and the Cadets as a form of camouflage, but isn't painted like this picture, but rather painted (thickly) in a random haphazard pattern. Nature gives us some incredible patterns- this starburst is a thistle growing on the  side of a trail nearby.  I am not sure the bee cares about the design, but it is enjoying the sweet nectar of the flower.

Speedy the tortoise wanted to contribute to this week's post. Her shell has a beautiful pattern. However, you can't tell a tortoise's age by counting the rings. Some years they grow new rings, some years they don't. We found Speedy as a baby, so we know she's 15.

James had his Junior League championship baseball game today.  They normally play 7 innings, but it was a tied game so they played 11 until the Yankees beat them.  Although his team lost, it was quite a game!  He is the catcher in the photo.

I thought PLAY would be an easy project for me as the children in our village, Matipwili, play a lot...
with homemade 'toys'.
Twice I was in the village (11kms from home) and only saw adults playing what they call 'drafti' on their home made, hand painted board with bottle tops for drafts.

The photo I am posting today doesn't represent play in itself, but the story behind it does. For Thursday and Friday this week, I was away on an Outdoor Ed camp. We were doing a mountain biking course, and the excursion we went on was a 37 km mountain bike ride through two stations (stations are like farms, but MUCH bigger) For much of the riding part of the camp, we were off road... riding on cattle tracks, but for the very last stretch of the ride we rode on a straight dirt road, which is what this photo is of. The photo was taken when we finally reached the end of our riding. On day one we rode 28km before camping the night under the stars (we took tents but decided we would prefer to sleep outside!) then when we got up in the morning we rode another 9 km out to the main road. So as you can imagine, my bum was sooooo sore and the whole group was exhausted. I had great fun, and I know the photo doesn't really show this, but I hope my little story does!

I tried to take my daughter to one of her favorite playgrounds today, only to find that it was completely covered in water from another crazy storm that we had last night. Sadly, I don't think she'll be able to play here any time soon!

Technically I am only posting one image but it is made up of four pictures.  Truth be told I felt I couldn't convey "play" with just one of the images alone.  This tells the story a whole lot better.  Annabelle played with her bubbles for about an hour.  I played with my camera and collage options for about the same amount of time.  Both of us happy playing with our toys.

Play hard.  My husband's version of 'play' is training for the NYC Triathlon which takes place this year on July 14th.  He has been swimming, biking, and running his heart out with the hopes of raising awareness for his cause.  He will be racing with Team LIVESTRONG in honor and in memory of the people we know who have been affected by cancer, including his grandparents, my uncle, and, of course, Kim's beautiful daughter, Carly.  I encourage you to visit his personal page HERE and consider donating to this meaningful and worthwhile cause.

Ok, not the greatest but it is 11:02pm and again I forgot to post earlier. I have this shot that I took as backup earlier this week, and I'm trying to learn to post regardless of how I feel of the photo (I think that's my finger in the top, left corner, but lets just work with it and pretend it is meant to be there). All kinds of wild critters, such as rabbits and squirrels, use this little pathway through the grass on a hillside behind my house.  They didn't cooperate when I asked if they would walk towards the camera though.

I used to traverse this path daily on my way into my high school. The brick buildings and greenery are what actually make it stand out. It always makes me feel great and young again to be back on my school grounds. And being home in Richmond, VA for my daughter's christening made my trip here even more special.

Very often we spend summer evenings at the beach near our home.  There are lots of walking paths, boardwalks, and sandy trails.  To me, this was the obvious spot to take a photo for this week's theme. (and like Gemma, my photo was in need of a subject, or three, because it was missing something!)

Its just my luck that I leave my picture to the last minute and then... IT RAINS! In Karratha, it rains probably twice a year, so I cant possibly curse it! This picture is taken of the path up the hill behind my High School. We occasionally walk up this hill for sport or Outdoor Ed and it has the most incredible view of the bush from the top.
